Ann Dick

February 1, 1924 — April 28, 2018

Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Grove, Oklahoma, 918-786-2261. Ann Garcia Dick, 94, resident of Grove, Oklahoma, passed away on April 28th, 2018 in Oklahoma City. She departed this life as she entered it, surrounded by family she dearly loved. Ann was born on February 1st, 1924 in Casablanca, Morocco, to Pedro Garcia and Soledad Garate. She grew up in Rabat, Morocco, where she ultimately met her loving husband, Jay native Thomas Dick. Ann graduated from the University of Rabat in 1946 and went on to work at the Argentine Consulate in the Moroccan capital, where she was working when she met Thomas, who himself was in Morocco working as a contractor for Morrison Knudson Construction. It was love at first sight, and the two were married one year later in 1953. Ann was a lover of languages and had a true talent for them. She grew up speaking Spanish at home with her parents, who had moved to Morocco from northern Spain in the early 1920s, English at school, Arabic on the street, and French everywhere in between. In 1956, after a brief stay in Paris, Ann and Thomas moved to Tehran, Iran, where Ann taught French at an international school. While there, she learned Farsi, bringing her total to 5 languages. In 1961, Ann, Thomas and their youngest son John Paul moved back to Grove, where she made her life for the next 56 years in a home that she and Thomas designed and built themselves. Here in Grove, she worked placing and counselling foreign exchange students in Oklahoma for the EF Foreign Exchange Student program for 36 years. Her work with EF earned her a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015. For 40 years, she also worked alongside her husband at Grove Ready-Mix. Ann loved art, education and her community. She was a founding member of the Brush and Palette Club, a lifelong French and English teacher, a 44-year proud member of the Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority, and an active member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, to all of which she dedicated herself passionately and proudly. Her greatest joy, however, was always her family. Ann was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Marie, her brothers Jaime and Eli, and her devoted husband Thomas. She is survived by her sons, John Paul and Alison of Oklahoma City, and Thomas Lee and Stephanie of Jay. Ann was blessed with seven grandchildren-Patrick and Yeneri of Vigo (Spain), Jennifer and Bayley Jordan of Oklahoma City, Jeremy and Christopher of Jay, Matthew of Owasso, Max Naifeh of Oklahoma City, Annissa Naifeh of Washington, DC-to whom she was simply "Nana". She was a very lucky aunt of close nephew Pierre Guillet and wife Leighanna of Poteau, OK, niece Bernadette Cenet of Marseille (France), niece Solange Westerhaus of Seoul, (South Korea), and many more special nieces and nephews near and far; a very proud great aunt of Nicolas and Ryan Guillet; and a delighted great-grandmother of Leonard Joseph. The family would like to thank many very special friends and wonderful caregivers who took care of her, especially during in her later years. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 to 8 pm, Thursday, May 3rd, 2018 at the Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home Chapel in Grove, Oklahoma. A funeral mass will be held at the St. Elizabeth Catholic Church at 11 am, Friday, May 4th. Ann will be laid to rest alongside her husband at the Duffield Cemetery in Jay, Oklahoma in a private family ceremony thereafter.
