Hazel Nadine
Riggs
January 23, 1931 – April 23, 2026
First Baptist Church of Jay
2:00 - 3:00 pm (Central time)
Hazel Nadine (Sixkiller) Riggs, 95, passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at Grandwood Assisted Living Center in Grove, Oklahoma. She was born on January 23, 1931, to Milo and Jennie Sixkiller, near Jay, Oklahoma.
Hazel grew up in Jay and graduated from Jay High School in 1948. On June 14, 1948, she married Joe Riggs. Together they raised two daughters, Connie and Kathy. Joe and Hazel celebrated their 50th anniversary before his passing in 1998. Hazel’s life was spent as a homemaker, taking care of her family and helping Joe with his business.
In 1967, they decided to put in a small mobile home park. Connie was one of the first residents while Ronnie was in Viet Nam. Through the years they had several renters who practically became family. They watched young families raise children there and saw a few of the older ones lose spouses. All were people they remembered forever. Joe did the manual labor and Hazel did the paperwork. As in everything they did, they each did their part.
Hazel was a Christian and a member of First Baptist Church, Jay, for over 60 years. Through those years, she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, worked in the kitchen, and went as a sponsor to church camp at Grand Lake Baptist Assembly, but the things she enjoyed most were reading her Bible and attending her ladies Sunday School Class.
In later years, she and friends Eunice Vaughn and Esther Mae Houck cooked food and took it to sick church friends. They often visited those in the nursing home. They frequently took time for a game of SkipBo. They had fun and they enjoyed helping others. They’re still working, just in a new location.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Milo Sixkiller and Jennie (Allspaugh) Sixkiller, her sister Ruby Sixkiller, her brother Lewis Sixkiller, a great- granddaughter Brianna Florer and her husband Joe Riggs. She is survived by her daughters Connie Vaughn and husband Ronnie and Kathryn Florer and husband Wayne. She also leaves behind five grandsons, Kevin Florer and wife Maribel, Scott Vaughn and wife Allie, Mark Vaughn and wife Delinda, Mike Vaughn and wife Rebeka and Brian Florer and wife Stephanie, 14 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
Hazel will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and homemaker whose life was defined by faith, family and devotion. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM, Thursday, April 30, 2026, at Frist Baptist Church in Jay. Hazel will be laid to rest in Duffield Cemetery.
